Event Tracking Strategy for Apps

A field map for product and engineering pairs who need signals that survive redesigns — not another bloated dictionary.

Abstract network of illuminated data points

1. Inventory before invention

List every event that hits production, who owns it, and which dashboard depends on it. Delete or archive silent events before adding new ones. Strategy starts with subtraction.

2. Agree on a grammar

Pick verb + object patterns and property contracts. Write them as examples, not abstract principles. iOS and Android must share the same dictionary entry for the same user action.

3. Protect three funnels

Choose activation, monetization, and retention journeys. Instrument them end-to-end and verify on device. Everything else waits until these three are trustworthy.

4. Govern lightly

Assign reviewers, require a one-line change log in PRs, and schedule a monthly taxonomy triage. Heavy committees stall shipping; no process invites chaos.

Privacy sits inside the strategy

For Thailand-facing apps, map consent moments to the events they unlock. Prefer fewer high-value events over spraying screen views. Document retention windows with your vendors so legal and product share one story.
